During photo taking, there's at least 40 of you.

Today's training? 11

Enough said ... I'm losing motivation too, getting out of here ... hopefully the next ic will be someone who is able to motivate the team better.

~ 1 more month of holz training ~

Thursday, November 20, 2008

Almost a month of holiday training ...

Just want to confirm:

We are not a running club i.e. not recommended for leisure runners - 10 x 1/2 = 5 mathematically but 5 committed athletes beat 10 half-hearted anytime.. At least for the Sec 3 08 batch, it's heartening to be able to name 5 - Kehui, Shanice, Haorong, Boyi, Hisyam - less than 5 months to go before shifting full gear to study, Jia You! [Please don't read as bo chap study, full gear training till post races... We are all learning how to best manage time.] Those turning up half the time (attendance 50% or less), improvement appreciated (still observing) - 5 months only, it's up to the individual.. enough said.

Sec 1s and 2s
Pleasant surprise welcomed but enough is enough with excuses like
being emo (elmo is cuter),
losing focus (e.g. psp, errr... bubble tea? =P),
sian,
looking for shortcuts,
losing .. lost interest (lack of motivation),
injuries (and doing nothing about it),
aches (head, stomach, legs...),
slacking (coach isn't looking),
taking training lightly (yak, yak, train, yak, yak, yak, train)
.
.
.
.
.
some of you have greater potential than you think you have (or so the coach says)

btw, the last bbq intended for bonding - did it really serve the purpose?

Holiday Training Schedule

Those who have received the letter to parent informing holiday training schedule (aka those who turned up @ 22nd Oct training) would have known by now - else this is for those absent with valid reasons [or think they are still in the CCA (and attending only when they feel like it? boo)]:

Year End Holiday Training:
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday @ 2 pm

Changes in dates would be convey, the training before - can think of at least 2 -> Next Monday 27th Oct Deepavali! and next Friday 31st Oct session to be postponed to Saturday 1st Nov since 1st Nov is JSS Open House (0830 - 1600 hr).

On a different note...
-> Bridging Gaps took place 2 days back - although they wanted Sec 1 and 2 athletes to represent the CCA initially, it's Bo Yi and Ke Hui (Thanks!) who ultimately got roped in to help. (huh?? that's my reaction too.) The Sec 2s were likely to be more OK with this (since they were out for rock-climbing) while some of the Sec 1s seem more disappointed for one decent reason (My Primary School juniors came!) or another (not so decent reason ... which I shall not elaborate)

-> Parents-Teachers Meeting took place yesterday - met some of your parents/guardian/siblings - wondered how many of you are compulsory cases (i.e. not performing up to to expectation, behaving badly, etc)?? A small number hopefully! Anyway, please submit your report slip for us to make a copy.

Was talking to a student who's CCA-less currently, he made a remark .. something like "But I had a CCA till Sec 2, won't I get the CCA points and won't the teacher write something for me in the testimonial at the end of Sec 4 or 5?" To clarify, once your CCA attendance falls below 50% in a particular year, any points earned in previous years DO NOT count. For attendance below 75%, any points earned in that year do not count. [So it makes no sense to just join races and skip trainings] And pleaseEe ... if you had created much inconvenience for your CCA teachers ic (e.g. in chasing for attendance, reasons for absence, etc), the teacher will not have much nice things to say too.

So this is really to those who hasn't been attending CCA regularly, or comptemplating to drop a CCA (and not get another CCA and who's quite pleased with the extra time for gaming, play soccer, etc), make sure you are able to carry the consequences which come along with your irresponsible behaviour. Just to confirm, all of you shouldn't be with Cross-Country if CCA points is your only concern (uniform groups will earn you more points).

----------------

Year end holz is the best time to train intensively but the school and surrounding at this time of the year isn't the best place - O level (volume down), renovation and repair, roadworks outside (uneven paths and roads), rain ... Whatever it is, will still need to train with or without these restrictions (next year National competitions are pushed forward), please take extra care of yourself.

~ end of exams, mid of O level, start of holz ~

Bridging Gaps 08

Missed out an important point from the previous post–especially for those MIAs - and reminder for those present–Mr Lim wants a copy of your result slip–pass your report book to me the last day of the term for photocopying.

More about Bridging Gaps for Sports CCA–it's scheduled a month later on 15 Oct 2008 morning. Bridging Gaps is an annual half-day programme in which we hope to recruit P6 students who are talented in Sports to come to our school. On our part, of course we would be looking out for students athletes with potential or show interest in running.

We've request to invite these 4 schools because they have a T&F team in the school - Fuhua Primary, Zhenghua Primary, Jurong Primary and Pioneer Primary. The final list is still pending as it will also depend on which schools the other Sports CCA nominated.

The 10 tentative ambassadors for Cross-Country / Track & Field are:
Selas, Reshmi, Kanessan, Wei Sheng,
Wan Ping, Nikki, Yi Ying, Samuel, Jin Ming, Jia Wei
Will inform again when the final list of schools who are invited is out; guess some of you rightly point out that the P6 will feel more welcomed if they can talk to an ex-senior from the same Primary school.

Btw, have you heard? Singapore's first ever gold medal in Paralympics comes from Yip Pin Xiu for 50 m backstroke
[She set a new world record of 57.92 s and that's for her heats]

Training 120908

So it's the last official training as CCA stands down for EOY preparation.

Alas... one of the sessions where many (especially the Sec 2s) were mia, for official reasons or otherwise (excuses?). Anyway, the team did 7 sets of circuits - knee lifts (using cones); Mr Lim pointed out various observations (which he did not wish to repeat):

- Landing (after over the cones) should be with forefoot; not flat foot.
- Lift the knee high and run across the cones; not skip or jump sideways.
- Strong swing of the arms by the sides (front and back).
- Maintain a straight, strong posture and look up front; not with tensed up shoulders and/or focusing on the ground.
- This has been emphasized times and again -> punctuality in warming up; need not depend on the vice captains to get the team ready; everyone can be more conscious about starting on time. Collecting of equipment and set up should be a team effort, regardless of level or gender.

That's the "practical" part–training!
Now's the "theory" i.e. academic!
For many of you, there's likely to be quite a lot to catch up; please inform me early if you need help for Mathematics and/or Physics (regardless of level/class).
& bear Mr Lim's words in mind, self train if possible, preferably in small groups with your teammates. It shouldn't take long (~1 hour) if you are focused.

Lunch, followed by consultation with me (while digesting food), then self-training -> Sounds good, doesn't it? =)

0969

0969 - That's the new world record
2163 - That's the number tag of Usain Bolt

2230 last night - did you catch the race? Bolt rewrites his previous record in a seeming easy manner. Think he slowed down the last 10 m or so, so that he may break it again soon? Especially enjoyed the replay of his front view while racing - a slower start as all run while looking down at the track... for the first 10, 20 m then head up and look in front, great swing of arms with fingers straight while exhaling and inhaling to regulate breathing. The last 30 m or so? No one can catch him! Hardly make a good commentator but you get the point if you've watched.

& the math part: 9.69 s for 100 m
= 100m / 9.69s
= (100/1000) km / (9.69 /60x60) h
= 0.1 km / 0.002692 h
= 37.1 km/h !

How about this one? -> 1708

1708 - That's the birth date of Mr Lim! May good health comes his way!

Reminder: Wed training: 1430 set up, 1445 warm up~

Project Nutz 08

The race came early this year (last year was in Nov); on 25th Jul but only received news 23rd Jul - I couldn't make it but Mr Ser updated the results as: Boys Team 4th and 7th, Girls Team 4th. Well done all who went and ran (despite the very late notice). Perhaps some of you can help track the race date next yr via: http://sg.geocities.com/projectnutz/project_nutz/project_nutz_frame.html

Any brought cameras along? The following were from the website - taken last year:

Was also reading red sports and found some interesting links:
*how long haven't we seen Mr Lim?
*always nice to have family support and a source of inspiration to look up to
*anyone went to support West Div C Boys basketball last week?

Trilympics 2008

Run for a meaningful cause tomorrow! Actually, most races are meaningful but personal and school glory aside, the event "... inaugurated in 2006 as part of the Olympic Dream Series, it aims to reach a climax in September 2008 as part of a send-off party for Singapore Disability Sports athletes heading to compete in the 2008 Paralympics, Beijing. " - they have been training hard! Refer: http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg/printfriendly/0,4139,161386,00.html

It's to fulfil the CIP hours.. yes... but look at the bigger picture and it may be easier to push yourself for 20 km tomorrow.

Week 2 - Nat T&F

Congrats to Samuel and Wan Ping for qualifying for the finals in their respective events [800 m C Boys, 1500 m and 3000 m C Girls]. Actually, all of you who went and ran your best deserve a pat on the shoulder whether you qualify or not. [Abloy don't deserve a ruler... yet.] Tough competition @ Nat T&F so nevermind the position, the main competitor to beat first is really yourself; your PB!

While the majority would not be able to support the morning races, do try to go for the afternoon ones and events coming Friday. [Then again, Shawn Nah was one of a handful who turned up to support the 4 x 100 m relays yesterday ... but was mia from school today – sick?]

10th July (tomorrow!!)
3000 m Wan Ping @ 1625 on 10th July (tomorrow!!)

11th July (Friday)
4 x 400 m C Girls
Yi Ying (356), Jia Hui (354), Nikki (355), Corrina (353) @ 0830

Wei Sheng (574), Ryan (573), Jin Ming, Kenneth (570), Alvin @ 1000

1500 m Wan Ping @ 1630 on 11th July (those attending matinee musical excused else should be able to make it for the evening slot)

Heard the 400 m relay boys have numerous trainings themselves …?? =)

CCA Tee

So the colour and material have been decided - please submit your designs and/or tagline to Shanice and/or Hazimah by 17th June else just be prepared to pay up (without irrelevant comments) =)

Cost of CCA tee might be subsidised - personalisation (e.g. name on sleeve) generally not recommended as it adds on to the cost - can always DIY; sew on the name or write with permanent ink...?

To start the ball rolling:
I belong ... I run
Our business ... we run
Keep running

As you can see, I'm rather stuck with 'run' for now so if you've anything more constructive, do suggest.

~neli neli boo boo you cannot catch me ~

Btw, X Trail Challenge - Congrats to all who went and won, had fun and/or been scammed (by the categories, prizes ... ).

Subsequent Trainings @ SRJC

3 more trainings @ SRJC, please make your own way down in pairs or small groups.

Route A (~1 hour)
Take MRT to Outram, transit NE line to Kovan, use Exit B to bus stop oppo Heartland mall and any of the buses go there (just two stops away).

Route B (~ 2 hours?? For those with bus concession)
Bus 30 from Boon Lay to Habourfront then transfer to bus 80 (don't know how long it takes). 80 stops @ Kovan and then SRJC.

Route C (~ 90 min??)
Bus 30 from Boon Lay to HBF -> NE line to Kovan -> Exit B ........

Route A the tried and tested - be punctual.

Train etiquettes especially for big groups travel:
1. Stay clear of doors; don't block the exit.
2. Give up your seats to those who need it more than you;
need not be pai seh.
3. No pole-dance; don't hog the entire pole.
4. Minimum noise volume; look out for the weary faced.
5.
6.
7.

Yesterday, on the way back, the train @ Outram was rather packed. Two JC students (they were in PE attire) finally managed to squeeze their way out of the train. Oddly, after that, they stood by the door as though waiting for the door to close. I look around, none of their school-mates was still on board. As the door closed, the two jokers shouted something to the passengers in the train and ran off to the escalator laughing. They seem to be the only two who found that funny. Expectedly, at least one of the passenger asked her companion "Which school is that?"

To end with a question:
Abloy, Samuel, Ravin - what's common?

~ They still don't get it. ~

Tuesday, May 27, 2008

1st Training @ SRJC

29th May - Please lunch early and meet 1245 @ Jurong East MRT station - platform area - nearer to tail end (for train heading town). Those who are boarding at subsequent stations can meet us slightly later (e.g Clementi 1250) but do inform the division captains. We'll make our way down together - at least for the first training.

-------------------------------------------

Subsequent holiday trainings
I know this is getting confusing with all the changes - the last I heard:
Mondays and Fridays 1430 - 1730 (latest) for all.
Additional Thursdays 1400 - 1700, compulsory for all athletes competing in National T&F.
Sec 1s especially, do explain to your parents. Let me know if you require a new parent letter.

-----------------------------------------

This is a reminder for Ke Hui, Shanice and Hao Rong regarding the Student Leadership Camp.

1) Leadership Seminar
28th May (12-3 pm)

2) Student Leaders Camp
12th June (0730)–13th June (1945).

The three of you should have received the consent forms. For the two above stated events, the importance of your involvement in the leadership module cannot be over-emphasized.

Change in timing for Tuesdays Trainings

No training tomorrow - 24th May Sat - Btw: it's family day tomorrow - do spend some / more time with your family!

Tuesdays training during the holiday for all (@ Jurong Stadium) starts at 0800!! Estimated end time: 1100.

(NOT the afternoon slot as per stated on the letter to parent.) Spread the message, especially to the Sec 1s.

A long debrief ...

Q1. When is Jurong Sec 45th anniversary dinner?
A) During the June holiday
B) 4th July
C) 7th July

Q2. When is Xcty/T&F photo taking?
A) 23rd May
B) Two days after school reopens
C) One of the two days after school reopens

We know who provided the wrong answers.

No thanks:
- for the long debrief (because I have to keep repeating?!)
- for the small chats and jokes going around
- for placing emphasis on small info (e.g. kind of food served) and neglecting the important, relevant ones

~ enough said ~

- confirming the list for National T&F - already registered!
- the more positive form / mood / mode of most of you during training!

A slow start ...

16th May - training resumes... but I'm sure those who were there would agree with me that it's sort of a s.l.o.w start.

Maybe it's because the Sec 4s weren't around ... maybe it's the post-MYE-get-back-results-day... maybe it's due to the lack of publicity/publication (I did not walk past the notice board.. I did not notice the notice board) ... or communication (nobody tells me today got training ...), these people ran (off? away? home?):

Johnathon Peh, Royson Tay, Shawn Nah, Kiam Chee, Yee Ann, Yew Weng, Ryan Poon, Rayner Tan, Alvin Chong, Andi Zahury

I'll hear their stories on Tues, plus there's still 5 to 6 who were absent with valid reasons. Valid reasons accepted - do turn up for the next training. Enough of the s.l.o.w start, things need to pick up FAST!

Next training: Wed 21st May - the last day to confirm who's running which event(s) for National T&F - please spread the news to ALL of your fellow teammates. Division captains especially - your job will be tedious till they learn to read the notice board or keep you updated.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

On a happier note, (although not getting new jerseys) next up, planning for CCA tee. The last one was a few years back (only see some Sec 4s wearing it every now and then) so it's really high time to get another one.

Main aim is to use it as a form of team identity (I belong to JSS Xcty / T&F team!) without being too loud (ha!). So it'll be a pre / post races tee or supporters' tee. Since all of you will be wearing it, play a part to ensure it'll be a tee you want to wear.

Calling all budding artists-designers cum athletes, please submit your designs! Closing date: 17th June. Hopefully it will be ready before July, in time for National T&F. Those who are clueless about drawing/designing, you can still contribute simply by:

A) voting for a colour + material.
Disclaimer: Teachers ic vote = 5 votes (!?)
By Kehui's request, added blue too. Though hardly a JSS colour, "blue top and red shorts quite cool... look like like superman." (sidetrack: I like blue too but I prefer spiderman.)

B) thinking of a team slogan
HaoRong (& others who agree with him): If 'Catch me if you can' is lame, do contribute something deem more suitable (fun, motivating, meaningful) yeah? For some inspiration, really like Ngee Ann Poly (Passion Beats Talent) and that on my red tee (There is no finish line) - copyrighted. Anyway, nothing beats original creativity.

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Some updates ...

1. Confirmed Training resumes tomorrow 16th May @ Jurong Stadium for all Sec 1s to 3s!!

2. The Sec 4s may not be involved in helping out for 45th anniversary celebration after all - realised it can't count towards CIP so they might as well have more time for the books. CIP must involve the community and JSS isn't quite 'community' - if you get what I mean. In which case, the Sec 4s and nasrul will still be down one of the days for CIP - which we are still wondering how it can be carried out - was thinking about the line of volunteering as helpers for some marathon or similar events... else clean up some parks ?? - Let us know if any of you have any suggestions yea?

3. With regards to point #2, it means those who are not pick for any National T&F events stand a higher chance of taking Sec 4s place - Helping the school - don't suppose any of you have any complaints yea?! =)

4. Ke Hui, Shanice and Hao Rong - submitted your names for SLC, 3 days somewhere mid June. I know it's not the first time going for SLC for some of you but student council is in process of slowly changing how it's carried out at the different level - so no complaints yea?! =)

5. It's get-the-fruit-of-your-labour (if you have studied hard) or face-the-music (if you have not) day tomorrow - hope it's more of the former but since I teach some of you, know a few falls in the latter category. Anyway, all of you have been through it many times, so all the best!

6. Finally, photos from National Cross Country 08 (in random orders). Alas we didn't manage any team photos this year... did the thought ever cross any minds? Weird it didn't occur to me this year at all *haiz* Not all athletes or supporters who went were captured... so keep a look out:

That's all!
